1996 GMC 1500 shock mounts

My 1996 Sierra 1500 rear shock mounts have seen better days. The rust is substantial on the axel as well as the upper and lower shock mounts.

The lower mount on the drivers side just snapped off last week.

The mounts are really just ears that were welded onto the rear axel. I have no fab skills/experience but my guess is that the axel condition is bad enough that a re-weld of new ears is not possible.

Any suggestions on a fix short of finding a new rear end?
