Plow painting vs Powder coat

I have been reading all the posts on the western thread and thought i wont tie up that thread anymore the poor western guy will be typing his fingers off has it is.

Ok iam reporting on a exper i preformed two seasons ago on one of my western unimounts with all of us in the same boat with powder coat and the Big problems it presents i thought i would share this. Two seasons ago this month i stripped a 8ft western down and sent the mould board to the sandblaster when i got it back i sprayed three coats of etch primer, followed by PPG base coat western red finally i finished it with five coats of clear coat , after two seasons plowing it looks almost has good has when i did it keep in mind that has scratches appear you can 1000 grit wet sand and wheel back out the scratches, i realize not everyone on here owns a hvlp gun or even a older style suction gun but you can buy one of the cheaper guns and get a pretty good job out of it for what were doing here. Another advantage of using the 2 stage paint system on a plow is it holds wax much longer which helps on snow sticking. i just pulled this plow out of storage and because of all the concerns on powder coat i thought i would share what i consider a pretty sucessful job. I think the key however is letting a proffessional sandblaster do the removal of all the powder coat i paid about $40.00 to have this done the fellow did tell me when i picked it up it took alot of time to get the powder coat off so well worth the money. has far has cost of paint and materials i use the ppg system for painting cars and trucks you wouldnt ness have to go with ppg, ommni and dupont also offer a nice paint all together probley about 75.00 worth of material sprayed best part no more flaking.

I agree. The powder coat on some of the Fisher plows was a real mess also. I don't remember the years involved, but we had one of the plows. After the first few months the powder coat was comming off in sheets. The next year we sand blasted it off and painted it with a Home Depot suction type sprayer ( around $45). One coat of primer ( I wish I knew about etching primer back then), 2 coats of the Fisher paint. Lasted 3 more years till we traded it in.

I also had the powder coat coming off my Western, the plow was brand new in 97. A buddy of mine works at a powdercoating shop. I gave it to him, he sand blasted it, then sent to through the ageing line. From what he told me, this is a huge oven that "bakes" the metal and takes all the moisture out of the metal. He was saying this is the biggest problem with plows, they don't "age" them and so they still have moisture in them and then once they have been used in the salt for a couple years the moisture and salt pop the powder coat off. Then he coated it, in medium blue to match the truck. I have the plow back since summer of 99, and the powder coat still looks like new. Just a thought.....
