You're advocating not completing tasks in your contract, to which you agreed and signed. Maybe you're referring to landscaping in your post, but your mentality shames the industry and you should be embarrassed, either way.

Nice looking parking lots don't keep grandma on her feet when it's icy. If you can't negotiate the price to a point acceptable to you, to perform the entire scope of work, why take the job? Grow a pair and say no.

Lol, I specially said if it snows, you have to plow, and I was speaking about their landscaping. I said no the first 3 times he called me, finally I gave in, they want to be ridiculous with their pricing, they get what they pay for. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions of course.

I understood what he meant.. but yeah i agree, that when companies/stores offer rates that are $10,000 a season or $300 per push when they should be 3-6x that amount, they'll never find good service. I'd simply refuse the work since i'll let someone else not get paid, but i fully understand why a company would be enticed to take the work on no matter what to make ends meet, figuring they can do the work and still get paid, but then quickly realize there's no POSSIBLE way they can cut any profit whatsoever doing the work "correctly".

What would you do?

----We are being offered 65% of what my bid was to service the location that we've done for years. Unbelievable. The only reason I haven't refused yet is because we literally do all the places around it. Do I take the peanuts like a good little monkey or give it up and let someone else dance for them and get a foot hold in my "hood"?

I think only you can answer that question. Can you still plow and salt the lot at a 35% pay cut and still turn a profit?

You are right. I'm not going to answer that publicly but for arguments sake, let's say we'd break even or make very little profit off the plowing. There will be hauling from this site however which would be additional.

One way I would look at it. And this is for myself. I would not want to give a low baller the chance to get into the middle of my show. Get my drift? Next thing you know next year around this time you will be taking a 35% pay cut on the rest of that whole parking lot if you even want to keep any and all of them accounts.

Just my 2 cents....

Not trying to sound like everything has to be fair, but I know lots of people that had to take pay cuts to keep their jobs (plowing and other work). I personally hate bidding competitive, but it is getting to the point where you have to in order to keep a certain amount of work. The economy sucks right now, and there's not much we can do about it. Hang in there and keep working hard. It will get better.

It's tough to compete. Had a few properties I did and lost one to a guy that came in at 40% of my price for the lot. One man show and he does not do many accounts. I am a 3 man show so I am not knocking him. But his price is so low that after paying for salt, calcium, gas and time. He will be lucky to break even on the property. I'm just glad he did no bid on my other ones as they are all the same size and for some reasont hey think they are going to get great service. Lets just say lots of old people and open from 5am to 10pm at night and they like the lot and walks wet all the time. I told them I would pick up mid season if things did not work out but they also have to sign an extension of a 3 year contract like the others already have. Quality work so they offered me that option.
