Jesus, thus thread turned into a train wreck. Of course everything is depending on what time it actually snows. You cannot plow at 6 if the snow hasn't fallen yet. I think I got my answer though. Seems all the 9am target time is the residential guys.

And if you think this is a train wreck, you ain't seen nuthin' yet. As for the "wreck", you asked an extremely broad question for which you received some extremely broad as well as specific answers. With excellent reasoning behind them. It just isn't exactly what you wanted to hear. Or here. Or is is heer. Whichever. |

Same here with mostly apartments. Communicate with your clients what their wishes are and try to build that into your route. With the apartments they realize that its impossible to keep every single flake off the lot. As long as their residents aren't calling and bitching about getting stuck in the lot drifts they are fine with what ever I do. I've got offices that need to be opened no later than 7. I've got restaurants and retirement homes that are good with 8. Of course this depends on the storm timing.

Work with your customers to clearly identify their expectations keeping in mind the reality of mother nature and what you can accomplish during any given period of time and thats how you figure out when things should be done. Don't make promises you can't keep but work hard to exceed their expectations of you.
But as mentioned several times before, it all depends on when the snow stops and how much snow falls. For example it takes our 7 trucks 5 hours each to accomplish what needs to be done for us.

Usually 5 am on normal overnight snowfall, storms we get done as timely as possible if it snows between 5 am and 10am.

In a so-called "perfect world" where it snows overnight, my rigs are on the road by 230. We hit the residentials first, then get to the parking lots by around 630-7. The majority of the lots are on my route and they are all within about 5-10 min of each other. I pretty much do the parking lots in order which they open, so the body shop that I do that has guys showing up at 730 gets done first, but the carpet store which doesnt open til 10 (or whatever time the manager feel like getting there) gets done last.
A few points here: -I do not guarantee ANY times to residential customers. I'm straight up honest with them and tell them pretty much what I said above about in a perfect world we start at 230 yadda yadda however, if it doesnt snow til 5am then we pretty much go right for the parking lots and worry about the driveways during the day so they will be done when they come home from work. -The old people that are worried about getting to the doctors or to the senior center, I tell them realistically you're prob going to cancel those appointments anyway as soon as you see snow in the forecast, to which they usually laugh and agree (they know I've caught them haha) -For the most part, when I explain to people how I run things, and how realistic the weather is and what we do to try and overcome that, they are usually appreciative of my honesty that I can't promise them it will be done by a certain time and sign the contract -Day of the week depends also, for example if we get a snow on a saturday night/sunday morning, I don't really care about the carpet store I plow, the auto body shop or the fitness equipment store because they arent even open on sunday. My main priority is the church I plow. On a weekday, the church is pretty low on my list of priorities, if anything I'll go there and clear out the spots where the church staff parks and do the sidewalks and then come back and do the rest of the lot later in the day. -Storms during the day we are usually out making laps through the lots to keep the main drags and the entrances clear and then we do the big cleanup after business hours at night.
