Ram won't go down, unless great force

I have been trying to put my newly aquired '86 'Burb together, and among a myriad of problems, the triangle won't go down. The piston is like new, underhood control in "down" position, and plow decends, but to slacken chain, I had to crank in the chain big time with a 10 foot 2x10. And I mean hard! I even removed the oil line and let the oil out. I should check to see if ram bent, but the plow was real nice, so I doubt that's the problem. The packing nut hasn't been touched, and the truck sat for 1 1/2 years. Andrew

When you removed the oil line from the lift ram, It should have dropped like a brick.


I think you need to address the packing nut in this situation.

Give the packing nut a 1/4 turn.
Raise the blade up, then coat the piston with ATF or plow oil.
And let it down.
If it still sticks than repeat.

The packing nut only needs to be tight enough to keep the fluid from leaking around the ram.

Sounds like a plan. I think the ram was sealed with hydraulic cement! :guns: Now I'll go and look for a jumbo wench. Adjustable, of course!
